Cheltenham Racecourse for The Jockey Club

The redevelopment of Cheltenham Racecourse delivered a significant enhancement to one of the UK's most prestigious sporting venues, strengthening its capacity to host major events and improving the visitor experience across the site. The project centred on the construction of the Princess Royal Stand, a new grandstand designed to accommodate approximately 6,000 spectators and serve as a landmark facility at the heart of the racecourse.

A distinctive feature of the stand is its external crescent walkway, which creates a dramatic amphitheatre?like setting overlooking the parade ring and winner's enclosure. This architectural gesture not only provides exceptional viewing opportunities but also enhances the sense of spectacle associated with race days at Cheltenham.

In addition to the new stand, the redevelopment incorporated a wide range of supporting works, including:
  • A new bar and restaurant facility
  • Refurbishment of an existing bar
  • Construction of two new spectator terraces
  • Delivery of extensive hard and soft landscaping to improve movement and amenity across the site
  • A newly created betting shop to serve racegoers

These elements were designed to work together to elevate both the operational functionality and the overall visitor environment, ensuring the racecourse continues to meet the expectations of large, diverse audiences.

The project also required the safe removal of asbestos and the demolition of several existing structures to make way for the new facilities. This early?stage enabling work was critical to preparing the site for redevelopment and ensuring the project could be delivered safely and efficiently.
