The Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) is a major research and innovation facility located at the Bristol & Bath Science Park. Developed by the University of Bath, the centre was created to support the next generation of clean, efficient, and low-emission vehicle technologies, providing industry and academia with access to world-class testing and development capabilities.
The facility houses a wide range of state-of-the-art experimental platforms designed to enable detailed systems-level investigation of propulsion technologies. These include environments for full-vehicle testing, allowing research to be conducted under conditions that closely simulate real-world driving. The building accommodates advanced laboratories, specialist rigs, and highly serviced testing spaces supporting multiple propulsion pathways-from refined combustion systems through to electric powertrains and emerging hybrid technologies.
IAAPS has been conceived as a future-focused centre that will play a critical role in supporting the automotive industry's transition towards ultra-low-emission and zero-emission vehicles. Alongside work on next-generation propulsion systems, the facility supports research into battery technology, electrification, energy storage, thermal management, and integrated system optimisation, helping industry respond to shifting legislative, environmental, and economic expectations.
Its location at the Bristol & Bath Science Park positions IAAPS as a central hub within the region's growing research and technology ecosystem, creating opportunities for collaboration between universities, start-ups, global automotive manufacturers, and specialist supply-chain partners.
The cost management services associated with this project were delivered by a member of our team during their previous employment. Responsibilities included developing cost plans for highly complex and technically demanding testing environments, advising on procurement and programme considerations for specialist automotive research facilities, and supporting the client in aligning financial, technical, and operational objectives across the project lifecycle.
