Bath Spa University purchased the Nicholas Grimshaw designed, former Herman Miller factory on Locksbrook Road in 2016. They have transformed it into a fantastic new RIBA Sterling Prize winning academic building for Bath School of Art and Design (BSAD).
The BSAD was spread over several sites in and around Bath and so incorporating the school into a singular location has created a holistic, collaborative identity. This allowed the students to visit a single site rather than many.
The grade II-listed factory in Bath is designed to reflect the manufacturer’s philosophy of open, inclusive and democratic working spaces that can be adapted to suit their purpose. The complex building refurbishment is in a central location and close to student accommodation on Lower Bristol Road and Oldfield Park. As a former factory used by Herman Miller, it is part of Bath’s industrial history.
