TQEC Research Hub for University of Bristol
The Temple Quarter Research Hub-often referred to as The Sheds-forms a key part of the University of Bristol's ambitious Temple Quarter regeneration programme. Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), the project involves the transformation of a series of existing industrial shed structures into a modern research, innovation, and collaboration facility at the heart of one of the UK's most significant urban redevelopment areas.
The scheme is intended to provide a highly flexible environment for cross-disciplinary research, enterprise partnerships, and academic collaboration. Building on the industrial character of the existing structures, the design retains and re-purposes key elements of the original fabric while integrating new interventions to create contemporary, adaptable workspace, specialist research areas, and shared collaboration zones. This approach reflects the University's aim to preserve the area's heritage while establishing a future-focused innovation hub.
The project also places strong emphasis on activation of the public realm, with improvements designed to enhance permeability across the wider Temple Quarter masterplan. By opening up former industrial land and creating new pedestrian connections, the development supports the regeneration of the district and strengthens links between the campus, surrounding neighbourhoods, and Bristol Temple Meads Station.
The facility is envisaged as a catalyst for partnership with industry, civic bodies, and technology-focused organisations, enabling research activity to sit alongside commercial engagement in a flexible, adaptable setting. Its strategic location and mixed-use nature ensure it will play a prominent role in the long-term academic and economic transformation of the area.
